Man, I did not know what to expect. I thought it would be leather, which I was sure I would dislike. I like real leather jackets and seats, but shave soap?
I was definitely wrong about that. It smells of my grandfather, his brother and my great grandfather and the memories it brings back cannot be replaced.
It's fresh with a little flower smell, some ceder, musk, and it's now in the top scents I've ordered far. Understand the scents get rated by 0.01 scale. This gets 10/10, and Shaped Dressed Man 10/10. The other 7 I've tried get 9.9/10. I'm gonna need a bigger storage cabinet cause not all these are available year round.
How does he do it???
This soap works really well. It lathers up nicely and it smells great.
Like all the Stirling shave soaps, this provides a comfortable and close shave with a wonderful classic fragrance. This will be my go to soap from now on.
I disagree with the "every episode of Matlock" descriptor. This is simply one of those scents that transcends time periods. It may have been the scent of the first aftershave you used, or one of the first ritual Father's Day gifts you gave to your dad. It's not in the category of most mass appeal colognes, but it is masculine, subtle, and appealing. Definitely notes of leather and powder, then spice with a hint of smoke and vanilla. I love it. And, as with all of Stirling's shave soaps, the performance is second to none. Add it to your collection with confidence.
I got the shave soap, balm, and splash! They are all wonderful. Great lather and scent! Love the shave!!!
Different,but I definitely enjoy it.
After having shaved for awhile with my first Stirling shave soap (Bay Rum), I ordered British Leather. When I unscrewed the top of the container and took a sniff, I thought, "This doesn't smell as good as Bay Rum.... am I going to regret this purchase?" Then, I shaved with it. Even though it isn't as aromatic as the Bay Rum, it has it's own REALLY good, clean, great smell. I have enjoyed this!
I have been waiting for Stirling to re-release their homage to English Leather. I have a half-full bottle of the original English Leather aftershave before Dana took over manufacturing. Stirling hit the mark with British Leather. Now I have a shave soap that takes me back 50+ years. You'd better get some before it's out of stock.
I have had this shave soap for a while and it’s absolutely amazing the smell alone screams fall it’s one of my favorites .
I really cannot say anything more than what other's have already said about this scent.
It's not new. It's nothing unknown. It is a classic scent that has been around probably since my grandfather was a young man. That in itself should be enough to tell you something.
Now, has Stirling Soap captured that original organic masculine aroma, that is the question. And is the quality of such a scent here in there product??
Well the answer those two questions would be in there books, there sales of this soap.
I for one, would think this must be, has to be there number one top selling shave soap scent. I don't know how it couldn't be.
Superb.
First, this is as much a statement on Rod, Mandy and the rest of the crew at Stirling as it is a review. In my opinion this company rates 5 stars for its attention to detail, service , product quality and Value for your money. They are always ready to help you out with any questions you may have and their product quality shows how much effort they put into making sure whatever the customer buys that they will be happy with their purchase.
Now the review, I like all of Stirling's shaving products, the only scent my wife doesn't like is Ben Franklyn but I like it so it stays in the rotation. The scent I like the most is English Leather, not only does it remind me of times past, it is an instant attention getter. Go to a party after shaving with this soap and putting on the aftershave and you will stand out, in a good way of course. It is a very masculine, pleasing scent but not over powering just enough to let people know your there. Just be aware this is a seasonal scent, buy back up aftershave if you want to wear it all year long as it goes quickly.
Thanks Stirling, top notch job, glad I found you.
Another great smelling scent from Sterling ! You could lather this stuff in a minnow bucket with a wire brush and it would perform great. Thanks again job well done !
I have only vague recollections of uncles, grandfathers and the old man using English Leather in regards to its scent so I can't do a one for one comparison, but this one is a a keeper. As in my other reviews, if the spousal unit looks up from a book and says "What are you wearing?" and not in a bad way, then it gets bumped up in the rotation. If you guys say it smells like English Leather, then I can dig it. Typical Stirling performance and value. 5 stars.
English leather has been around since 1949.
I don't remember my Grandfather wearing it, but it smells like him
With that said, while I think I "have seen every episode of Matlock" this scent is Icon and classic and just an awesome scent to have as a baseline everyday scent. So glad that Stirling produces this, and keeps it in its annual rotation
Our sense of smell is our most associative to memory. Every time I shave with this, I remember my grandad. This is a finer version of English Leather, and it's wonderful.
This does have that sort of old school vibe of the original, but to my nose I get more leather, and something almost a bit smoky. It really reminds me of a classy library in an old mansion. Leather, hint of smoke, I think there's some vetiver in there, a little powder. It's just really nice, almost comforting, and really a great scent for cooler weather.
My wife and I both like this scent better than we anticipated. Complicated but not overbearing. I only wish the scent is stronger.
Great lather. Great sent. Made for a close clean shave.
As with all Stirling products you get your bang for your buck. Outstanding lathering performance that leaves behind a slick surface. The shave soap smells great just like old English Leather.
Your shave soaps are great performers. So for me is not a question if I'm going to buy a Stirling shave soap or not, but which scent do you like.
Scent could be stronger. Lather and slickness is the usual Stirling high standard
The smell reminds me of stepping into a Western store full of leather goods. For me the scent could be much stronger - I love scents with backbone. As for performance-this is another quality soap in the Stirling Collection. It lathers-protects-and most of all leaves your face feeling conditioned and ready for the day. I hated to give it four stars, but I would like it to have a stronger scent.............It's still a Keeper !! !!!!!
Good lather but the sent is not very strong
The scent of British leather brings me back to my childhood. I really enjoy this soap.
It truly smells like british leather. I'm not sure I could describe what british leather was supposed to smell like, but they nailed it. It lathers great and foams with the right amount of work, probably my favorite shaving soap so far!
This smells exactly as described, and lasts all day. Another great product.
